I just finished a consultation call with a new client and I want to tell you what was all about because I think you can benefit from it.
I asked her about her business, and she told me that she got started 2 years ago but that she is not making enough money. Then I asked: “What business are you in?” And she said she is in the weight loss, pets and fashion businesses. Three different markets that are completely unrelated, it didn’t shock me because I know many people use to do this kind of things because they think they will make more money.
At this point I wanted to know how she was managing her time and she said that she didn’t have a work schedule, that she starts doing the first thing that comes to her mind. After hearing all this I realized that I would have to break the rules and extend the call because this person was needing immediate help.
I didn’t ask any other question and started to explain her all the things she was needing to know, with How’s and Why’s. The call should be 1 hour long but we were talking for about 2 hours and 45 minutes. It was a little hard to make her understand the importance of niches and sub niches, but she got the point and now she’s ready to re-start from scratch.
You see, she had been online for 2 years and had made almost no money. She was still struggling, she was without direction. It is really sad to see that someone has wasted 2 years of his life trying to make money online due to the lack of direction.
Just in case you are in a similar situation or you don’t know anything about marketing a niche, let me explain you why you have to market to a niche and how.
What’s a niche?
My definition of niche is when you take a large group and narrow it down to a small group.
When you are doing what my client was doing – Mass Marketing – you spend a lot of money and you have more competitors. You’ll compete with experts and with companies or people who have a huge budget.
If you already identified the market you want to target your next step is to narrow it down. In the case of my client – she is in the weight loss – she can narrow down this to:
   1. Weight loss exercising
   2. Weight loss diet pills
   3. Weight loss diet
Then pick one of these and narrow it down to a sub niche, for example: Weight loss exercising for women. But she can go even deeper and create a new sub niche: Weight loss exercising for women between 25 and 45.
At this point you can become the expert in this small niche, you position yourself and people start to trust you. It makes you stand out from your competition.
But there are some things you have to keep in mind. The broad market has to be a hungry market with proven buyers and when you narrow it down you have to make sure that these people are willing to spend money.
Also, you have to find the 4 or 5 most successful people in that niche and study their marketing materials – strategist, methods, tactics, etc.
Then in order to create your product you ask yourself these 3 questions:
   1. What is missing from the broad market?
   2. What problem can I solve that the others aren’t solving?
   3. How can I improve a current product? Adding value.
Never assume that everything is going to work perfectly, you have to test everything.
After explaining all these things to my client, the only thing she said was: Wow! I’ve learned more in this call than with all the eBooks and DVD’s I have bought.
The point I want you to understand is that if you try to target different markets, or you try to market to all the folk you are apt to fail. But if you market to a niche you have all the chances to succeed.
So, if you learned something from this post go ahead and start implementing, but start RIGHT NOW!
Thanks,

Hi PV. This was a very informative article. I too learned a lot. I am in the 95%, but do not want to stay there! I have a good site, but I am not sure how to find the niche people.
I know that it is the baby boomers mainly that I want to attract, as I know tthat they want good skin care. I am article writing, but not sure where to submit other than to ezineArticles. I read your info on article submissions, but was not sure what I was reading about.
I find that I read too much and I go into overload, and get so frustrated I do nothing. I am really wanting to learn, but am not sure that I am trying to learn too much at one time. Thanks for all of your good information.

Hi Karla, thank you for your visit.
I hope you keep dropping by because I’ll be sharing more useful information.
I know that when you’re starting it is harder because you’re without direction, but once you identify your target market and you narrow it down everything starts to flow easier.
Keep doing!
